What Is a Ratio?

How to Simplify a Ratio

To simplify a ratio, divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor.

Simplified Ratio = A ÷ GCD : B ÷ GCD

For example:

Simplify:

12 : 18

The greatest common divisor of 12 and 18 is 6.

Divide both terms by 6:

12 ÷ 6 : 18 ÷ 6 = 2 : 3

Therefore:

12 : 18 = 2 : 3

What Is an Equivalent Ratio?

Equivalent ratios represent the same proportional relationship.

These are equivalent because both sides have been multiplied by the same factor.

How to Calculate an Equivalent Ratio

Multiply both terms by the same scale factor.

A × X = B × C
