What Is a Weighted Grade?

A weighted grade is used when different assessments contribute different amounts to the final course result.

For example:

• Assignment = 20%;
• Mid-semester test = 30%;
• Final exam = 50%.

A high score on the final exam has more impact because the exam is worth a larger percentage of the course.

How to Calculate What Grade You Need on the Final Exam

If you know your current weighted grade, remaining assessment weight and desired final grade, the required score can be estimated using:

Final Exam Grade Example

Suppose you currently have 52 percentage points toward your final course grade and the final exam is worth 30%.

You want an overall result of 70%.

You would therefore need approximately 60% on the final exam.

What If the Required Grade Is More Than 100%?

If the result is above 100%, the selected target cannot be reached using only the remaining assessment under the entered assumptions.

For example, needing 115% on a final exam means the desired overall grade is mathematically unavailable without bonus marks, reassessment or another change to the course structure.

What If I Already Reached My Target?

If your completed weighted assessments already provide enough contribution to achieve the selected target, the calculator may show that little or no additional percentage is mathematically required.

Course rules may still require you to sit a final exam or meet minimum assessment requirements.

How Do Letter Grades Work?

Letter-grade systems vary between schools, universities and countries. This calculator uses a general reference scale:

• A: 85% or above;
• B: 75% to 84.99%;
• C: 65% to 74.99%;
• D: 50% to 64.99%;
• F: below 50%.

Your institution may use a different grading scale.

Australian University Grades

Australian universities often use classifications such as High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Pass and Fail, but exact cut-offs can vary by institution and course.

A common example is:

• High Distinction: 85–100%;
• Distinction: 75–84%;
• Credit: 65–74%;
• Pass: 50–64%;
• Fail: below 50%.

Do Assessment Weights Need to Add to 100%?

For a complete final-course calculation, assessment weights would normally total 100%.

If only some assessments have been completed, their total weight may be less than 100%. The calculator displays the amount of course weight currently represented.

What Is the Difference Between Raw Grade and Weighted Grade?

A raw grade treats each available mark equally.

A weighted grade gives each assessment a defined proportion of the final course result.

These two methods can produce different answers when assessment sizes and course weights are not proportional.

How Do I Calculate a Pass Mark?

Enter the pass threshold used by your institution.

If the calculated grade is equal to or higher than that threshold, the calculator shows a pass result.

How Many More Marks Do I Need to Pass?

In a points-based course, the approximate marks needed to reach a pass can be found from the required total score.

For weighted courses, use the target-grade section to determine the required percentage on remaining assessment weight.
