How to Use the Australia GST Calculator

Use the calculator in one of two ways.

Add GST to a price

Choose Add GST when your starting amount does not include GST. Enter the GST-exclusive amount and the calculator will show the GST amount and final GST-inclusive price.

Remove GST from a price

Choose Remove GST when the price already includes GST. The calculator will determine the GST component and the underlying GST-exclusive amount.

What Is GST in Australia?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is a broad tax that applies to many taxable goods and services supplied in Australia.

For a standard taxable supply, GST is generally calculated as 10% of the GST-exclusive value. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Not every transaction is treated the same way. Some supplies can be GST-free or input taxed, so the standard calculation should only be used where GST applies to the taxable amount. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

How to Add 10% GST

To add Australian GST to a GST-exclusive amount, multiply the amount by 10% to determine the GST, then add it to the original amount.

GST = GST-exclusive price ร— 10%

GST-inclusive price = GST-exclusive price ร— 1.10

Example: Add GST to $100

If the GST-exclusive price is $100:

GST:

$100 ร— 10% = $10

Price including GST:

$100 + $10 = $110

How to Remove GST From an Inclusive Price

A common mistake is to remove GST from a GST-inclusive price by simply subtracting 10%. That does not give the correct result for the standard 10% Australian GST calculation.

Where a taxable price already includes 10% GST, the GST component is generally 1/11 of the GST-inclusive price. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

GST amount = GST-inclusive price รท 11

GST-exclusive price = GST-inclusive price รท 1.10

Example: Remove GST From $110

If the GST-inclusive price is $110:

GST:

$110 รท 11 = $10

Price excluding GST:

$110 โˆ’ $10 = $100

Why Isn’t GST 10% of the GST-Inclusive Price?

The 10% GST rate applies to the value before GST is added.

If a $100 item attracts $10 GST, the final price is $110. The $10 GST is therefore:

$10 รท $110 = approximately 9.09% of the GST-inclusive price

This is why dividing a standard GST-inclusive price by 11 is the correct shortcut for extracting the GST component.

$5,000.00 $500.00 $5,500.00

GST-Exclusive vs GST-Inclusive Price

GST-exclusive

A GST-exclusive price does not yet contain GST. If GST applies, the tax needs to be added to determine the amount payable by the customer.

GST-inclusive

A GST-inclusive price already contains the applicable GST amount. Where the standard 10% rate applies to the entire taxable price, the GST component can be calculated as 1/11 of that inclusive price.

Does Everything in Australia Include GST?

No. The GST treatment of a transaction depends on the nature of the supply. A supply may be taxable, GST-free, input taxed or otherwise outside the taxable-supply rules. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

This calculator does not determine whether a particular product, service or transaction is legally subject to GST. It only performs the mathematical GST calculation using the rate you enter.

Can I Use This Calculator for Business Invoices?

You can use it as a quick arithmetic tool when preparing or checking amounts, provided the relevant transaction is actually subject to the GST rate entered.

However, issuing a valid tax invoice and determining the correct GST treatment can involve additional requirements. Mixed supplies can also contain taxable and non-taxable components, which may need to be apportioned rather than applying 10% to the entire amount. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

Important distinction

This calculator answers the arithmetic question: “How much GST is in or should be added to this amount?” It does not determine whether the underlying transaction is a taxable, GST-free or input-taxed supply.

Why Does the Calculator Allow a Custom GST Rate?

The calculator defaults to the standard Australian rate of 10%.

The custom-rate option is included for mathematical modelling, historical calculations or situations where a user wants to apply another percentage. Changing the calculator rate does not mean that another GST rate legally applies to an Australian taxable supply.

GST Calculator for Sole Traders and Small Businesses

GST calculations are commonly required when preparing quotes, invoices, expenses and bookkeeping records.

For example, a business may need to:

  • Add GST to a GST-exclusive quote;
  • Identify the GST component of an inclusive supplier invoice;
  • Compare GST-exclusive and GST-inclusive prices;
  • Check invoice calculations; or
  • Calculate GST when entering bookkeeping information.

Actual GST reporting obligations depend on your business and registration circumstances, so accounting or ATO guidance may be appropriate where the treatment is uncertain.

Australia GST Calculator FAQs

What is the GST rate in Australia?

The standard GST calculation for a taxable supply is 10% of the GST-exclusive value.

How do I add 10% GST to a price?

Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.10. For example, $100 excluding GST becomes $110 including GST.

How do I calculate GST from an inclusive price?

Where the full price is subject to standard 10% GST, divide the GST-inclusive price by 11 to find the GST component.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.10. For example, $110 including GST becomes $100 excluding GST.

Why can’t I just subtract 10% to remove GST?

Because GST is 10% of the GST-exclusive amount, not 10% of the final GST-inclusive total. At the standard rate, GST represents 1/11 of the inclusive taxable price.

Does GST apply to every product and service?

No. Some supplies may be GST-free, input taxed or otherwise non-taxable. This calculator does not determine the GST status of a transaction.

Is Easy Calculator affiliated with the ATO?

No. EasyCalculator.com.au is an independent calculator website and is not affiliated with the Australian Taxation Office or Australian Government.
